Sometimes we can not synchronise files automatically. When this happens, we will report the affected files as sync problems. This guide explains the various types of sync problems, and how they can be resolved.
TIP: always check if there are software updates available when you run into any problems.
File conflicts
File conflicts are the most common type of sync problem. It means there are changes to the file on your local device, and on the server. Depending on the type of file change, the desktop client will suggest a solution:
- Keep local version (server version will be overwritten, old version is still available in revisions)
- Keep server version (your device changes will be overwritten - caution!)
- Rename your version (the desktop client sync problem handler will suggest a new name)
- Temp ignore (ignore this file, until next client restart)
More details about conflicts and how to solve them, can be found here.
Invalid characters
Nomadesk is a multiplatform solution, that can sync your files to various devices: macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, Web, ..
In order to make sure your files can work on all platforms correctly, the filenames shouldn’t contain any characters that aren’t supported on all platforms.
To resolve:
Rename the file so that the filename does not contain any unsupported characters. The Syncproblem handler on your desktop client will suggest a new name (invalid characters will be replaced with _)
More information can be found here.
Case sensitivity
This happens when you have a filename that is identical, except for casing.
Example: test.txt and TEST.txt
To resolve:
Rename 1 of the files. The Syncproblem handler on your desktop client will suggest a new name.
Local Permission Denied (File in use?)
This happens when the file could not be written on your local device.
Most common cases:
- The file is in use by another application. Sync will resume when the other application is closed.
- The folder does not have write permissions. Please check the permissions of the file.
More information can be found here.
Remote permission denied
Check your Vault permissions at myNomadesk.com. If those are not the problem, contact our support.
Path Too Long
Windows has a restriction on path length. Please rename the file or parent directories, so that the filename is shorter.
More information can be found here.
File transmission error (Filecontent different):
This happens when we synchronize a file change, but the verification failed. It usually means the file was updated during the sync. The sync will automatically retry.
If that does not resolve the problem, please trigger a reindex of your Vault.
- right click the vault in the desktop application
- properties -> reindex + OK
If the problem still persists, contact our support.
File Locked
The file could not be synchronized, because it is locked by another user.
More information about file locks can be found here.
Unknown
Synchronization encountered an ‘unknown’ problem and the Sync will retry.
You can also choose to ‘temp ignore’: the file will then be ignored in synchronization, until the desktop client is restarted.
If the problem persists, please try the following:
- Check the file, and it’s permissions
- Trigger a full sync (right-click the Vault in the desktop application, choose Properties from the menu, and click the ‘Synchronize now button).
- Trigger a reindex (right-click the Vault in the desktop application, choose Properties from the menu, and click the ‘Reindex’ button).
If the problem still persists, contact our support.
